Fabrication of Titania Microspheres Using Alginate Microdroplets on an Oil/hydrogel Interface

We developed a novel fabrication technique of titania microspheres utilizing a robust external gelation method on an oil/hydrogel interface. By putting sodium alginate droplets on an interface between oil and Ca 2+ -loaded hydrogel, surfactant dissolved in oil forms amphiphilic bilayer. Water molecules and calcium ions transfer through this amphiphilic bilayer. As a result, alginate droplets shrink and gelate. This method was applied to fabrication of titania microspheres. The size and the density of titania microspheres can be controlled by adjusting the concentration of calcium chloride and sodium alginate, temperature and processing time of water absorbance on the agarose-gel plate.
